The country is encircled by seas on three sides: the Aegean Sea to the west, the Black Sea to the north and the Mediterranean to the south. Turkey also contains the Sea of Marmara in the northwest.

The coastal areas of Turkey bordering the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea have a temperate Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild to cool, wet winters. The coastal areas of Turkey bordering the Black Sea have a temperate Oceanic climate with warm, wet summers and cool to cold, wet winters.

The territory of Turkey is subdivided into 81 city. The capital city is Ankara and the largest city isİstanbul (13,624,240).
Turkey is bordered by eight countries: Bulgaria, Greece, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Azerbaijan,Iraq and Syria.
A member of the organizations: Council of Europe, NATO, OECD, OSCE, the G-20 major economies, Turkic Council, Joint Administration of Turkic Arts and Culture, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Economic Cooperation Organisation.

Turkey began full membership negotiations with the European Union in 2005, having been an associate member of the European Economic Community since 1963 and having joined the EU Customs Union in 1995.
